German Mezzo-soprano Sophia Maeno has a warm round and full legato voice with a clear and shiny top.
She was born in Schwerin and studied singing in Dresden, Rome  and Karlsruhe, completing her training privately with Brigitta Seidler-Winkler. Study visits took her to Italy, Russia, Israel and the USA. She was a scholarship holder of the Yehudi  Menuhin Foundation ‘Live Music Now’ and the Richard Wagner Association.
From 2012 to 2014, she was a member of the SWR Vocal Ensemble before joining the Mecklenburg State Theatre in Schwerin as a soloist in 2014. Sophia Maeno has been working as a freelancer since 2016. Engagements have taken her to the State Theatre Schwerin, the Landestheater Flensburg, the Saarländisches Theater Saarbrücken, the  Theater Erfurt, Theater Ulm, Theater Dessau and the Palau de les Arts theatre in Valencia.
Since 2017, Sophia Maeno has been engaged as a resident guest at the Chemnitz Theatre, where she has performed in roles such as Cherubino (Figaro), Hansel (Hansel and Gretel),  Goffredo (Rinaldo), Floßhilde (Rheingold/Götterdämmerung), Walküre (Grimgerde/Schwertleite), Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus) and Octavian (Der  Rosenkavalier). In the 2021/2022 season, she made her debut there as the highly acclaimed Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde.
In 2023, she made her debut as Carmen and shortly afterwards took on the role of Amneris in Verdi’s Aida. Sophia Maeno performed this same  role in the AIDA opera spectacle 2024 on large arena stages.
Her activities are also expanding internationally as an oratorio and concert singer. For her tireless commitment, she recently received the Art and Culture Prize of the City of Schwerin 2024.
