Seoul-born baritone Seho Chang has a dark dramatic and strong voice with a brilliant top.
He completed his vocal studies at the Korea National University of Arts and then continued his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
During his studies, he was engaged by the Landestheater Linz and began his stage career in 2009 at the stage career at the opening production of Philip Glass’ opera for the “European Capital of Culture” in 2009.
Seho Chang was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Landestheater Linz from 2010 to 2017 and worked closely with with renowned directors such as Uwe Eric Laufenberg, Achim Freyer, Robert Wilson, David Pountney, Olivier Tambosi and Dietrich Hilsdorf. During this time, he took on a wide range of roles, including Scarpia in Tosca, Rigoletto in Rigoletto, Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, Ford in Falstaff, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Marcello in La Bohème, Talbot in Maria Stuarda, Dr Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Sid in Albert Herring, Escamillo in Carmen, Marquis de la Force in Dialogues des Carmélites, Nilakantha in Lakmé, Haraschta in Das schlaue Füchslein, Dr Falke in Die Fledermaus, Donner in Das Rheingold, Fritz Kothner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Gunther and Alberich in Götterdämmerung, Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande, Johannes Kepler in Die Harmonie der Welt and Jochanaan in Salome etc.
His performances, especially in the roles of Jochanaan and Golaud, were highly praised by critics.
In the role of Golaud, Seho Chang was also described by the Kronen Zeitung as “grandiosely torn”. The Onlinemerker praised: “Seho Chang – the Korean baritone finely portrayed all facets of the role with a beautiful, powerful, dark voice, with the finest differentiation.” The Salzburger Nachrichten noted: “Seho Chang plays the jealous Golaud with a powerful voice and gloomy posture.” Furthermore, his
interpretation of the main character of Kepler in Die Harmonie der Welt by P. Hindemith was honoured by the music magazin Opernwelt
In his career, he has also received international competition awards, including finalist of the Concorso Voci Verdiani in Busseto and winner of the Schubert Prize at the Richard Tauber Competition in London. He also received a Bayreuth Scholarship from the Richard Wagner Society Linz in 2013.
During this time, Seho Chang also had guest engagements, including Nilakantha at the Trier Theatre and Rigoletto at the Augsburg Theatre. Through his stage performances, he was able to perform works such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s “Die erste Walpurgisnacht” at the Brucknerhaus Linz, as well as further concerts and recitals in Hungary (Museum Pannonia Reformata) and South Korea (Gyeongju Arts Centre, Sori Arts Centre).
Other highlights of his concert appearances included a New Year’s concert in Radomsko, Poland, the performance of “Carmina Burana” at the Stadthalle Wels and a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth at the Plauen-Zwickau Theatre. In Korea, he performed as part of the Daejeon Baroque Festival and took part in a concert performance of performance of “Le nozze di Figaro” in Uljin in South Korea. He sang Handel’s cantata “Apollo e Dafne” in 2022 with the Bad Reichenhall Philharmonic Orchestra.
