Artem Lonhinov, born in Dnipro, Ukraine, began playing the violin at the age of four. After graduating with distinction from the Dnipro Music School as a violinist, composer, and conductor, he moved to Germany in 2014 to continue his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. In February 2022, he completed his violin studies with Prof. Olga Bloch-Voitova and Prof. Ingolf Turban. He began his bachelor’s degree in orchestral conducting with Prof. Bruno Weil and Alexander Liebreich, and later continued with Prof. Marcus Bosch and Prof. Georg Fritzsch, earning his master’s degree in June 2022.
Artem is currently First Kapellmeister and Deputy General Music Director at Theater Freiburg. In the 2025/26 season, he will take on the musical direction of Verdi’s Rigoletto, Massenet’s Werther, the new production Europa, as well as a symphony concert and the New Year’s concert.
From 2023 to 2025, Artem Lonhinov served as First Kapellmeister at Oper Bern, where he conducted works such as Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Puccini’s Tosca, Strauss’s Arabella, Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas, and Verdi’s Rigoletto. He has collaborated with renowned orchestras including the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, and the Stuttgart Philharmonic. He also participated in masterclasses with Paavo Järvi, Leonid Grin, Prof. Nicolas Pasquet, and Prof. Jorma Panula. As an assistant, he has worked at the Staatstheater Nürnberg and the Heidenheim Opera Festival, and he has conducted at the Junge Oper Weikersheim, the Staatstheater Karlsruhe, and Theater Brandenburg. In Munich, he leads the chamber orchestra “Ukraina München,” specializing in the music by Ukrainian composers. In April 2019, he was admitted to the Forum Dirigieren of the German Music Council, and in 2021 advanced to its second sponsorship level as well as to the “Konzertförderung” artists’ roster.
